JAPAN HIT BY RECORD RAIN AS FLOODING SPREADS
Something extreme unfolded across Japan’s Fukui Prefecture today.
More than 300 mm of rain fell across several areas in just 24 hours, with Katsuyama recording roughly 350 mm the most ever recorded there.
The rain became so intense that Japan issued its highest Level 5 emergency warning for Fukui, Ono and Katsuyama as rivers swelled, roads flooded and landslide danger increased.
At one point, around 400,000 people were told to take emergency action.
The highest-level warning has since been lowered, but flooding has already hit homes and roads, and the saturated ground remains a concern across the hardest-hit areas.
In some places, an entire month’s worth of rain fell in roughly a day.

BIG SUR FIRE SURGES AS THREAT REACHES ANOTHER COUNTY
The wildfire situation along the Big Sur coast changed dramatically today.
The Plaskett Fire has surged from around 8,200 acres to nearly 15,500, almost doubling in size while containment remains at just 1%.
And now the concern is spreading farther south.
Evacuation orders have reached the southern edge of Monterey County, while people just across the line in northern San Luis Obispo County are now under evacuation warnings as the fire continues burning nearby.
At the same time, the Timber Fire is still burning across nearly 25,000 acres, bringing the two fires to more than 40,000 acres combined.
What started as two major fires along the Big Sur coast has now grown into a much larger fight with one fire nearly doubling in size and another county preparing for what could come next.

🌀MAJOR HURRICANE KARINA RAPIDLY INTENSIFIES IN THE EASTERN PACIFIC — CATEGORY 4 FORECAST
Major Hurricane Karina has rapidly intensified over the eastern Pacific Ocean, strengthening into a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph and a minimum pressure of 954 mb.
While the NHC says this period of rapid intensification may be beginning to level off, conditions remain favorable for additional strengthening over the next 12–24 hours.
Karina is forecast to reach 145 mph Monday, making it a powerful Category 4 hurricane, before gradual weakening is expected to begin Tuesday.
The hurricane remains far from land, about 985 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, with no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

🌀COULD EDOUARD BE NEXT? TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT BECOMING INCREASINGLY POSSIBLE IN THE GULF
Invest AL97 continues to become better organized south of Louisiana, and the NHC now gives it a 70% chance of development over the next 48 hours and 7 days.
A short-lived tropical depression or tropical storm could form before reaching the Upper Texas or southwestern Louisiana coast Tuesday or Tuesday night. If it becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Edouard.
Tropical Storm Watches or Warnings could be issued as early as tonight or Monday morning. Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall is expected across portions of southwestern Louisiana and Upper Texas.

HURRICANE KARINA IS ABOUT TO GET MUCH STRONGER
Karina went from a tropical storm to a hurricane overnight and now things could accelerate fast.
Winds have already reached 80 mph, but conditions ahead could send Karina toward 120 mph by Monday evening.
That would make Karina a Category 3 major hurricane in barely a day.
Karina is expected to continue pushing west across the Pacific, with 33-foot seas already building around the storm.
And farther down that westward track sits Hawaii.
The exact path is still shifting, but Karina has a lot of Pacific ahead of it and the next few days could change everything.

SICILY IS BURNING AS WILDFIRES BREAK OUT ACROSS THE ISLAND
Dozens of fires are burning across Sicily at the same time.
Flames have pushed dangerously close to homes, evacuations have been carried out in some communities, and helicopters are attacking fires from above as crews fight to keep them from spreading farther.
Near Chiaramonte Gulfi, flames advanced toward homes before repeated helicopter drops helped stop the fire from reaching them.
Near Catania, another fire developed close to a gas storage facility.
And in the Palermo region, crews have been fighting a major fire for more than 18 hours as it moved across valleys and roads through the Madonie area.

🚨 GRAND CANYON FLASH FLOOD - MISSING or UNACCOUNTED people‼️
More than 20 people may be missing or unaccounted for after Saturday's flash flood in Bright Angel Canyon. 62 people have been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail, with more evacuations underway today. No injuries reported.
About an inch of rain fell in 30 minutes over the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire burn scar — ground that can't absorb water. The runoff destroyed nearly every footbridge over Bright Angel Creek.
Closed until further notice: Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the North Kaibab Trail, Black and Silver bridges, and the Colorado River to river traffic.
If you know someone who was in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, call NPS Investigative Services at 888-653-0009. You don't have to give your name.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for northern Arizona through Monday night, with NWS warning of flash flooding in and around burn scars and steep terrain.

HUNDREDS FEARED TRAPPED AS NEPAL RESCUE TAKES DRAMATIC TURN
The search in Nepal just went underground.
After days of digging, rescuers have finally reached a buried tunnel at the Upper Trishuli hydropower complex.
Crews broke through the top of the tunnel, creating an opening roughly 2 by 3 feet before rescuers were lowered inside to call out for survivors.
So far, there has been no response.
Now crews are working to widen the opening and push the search deeper, while heavy machinery is being airlifted into areas where roads were destroyed by the disaster.
Hundreds of hydropower workers remain unaccounted for across the disaster zone.
And now the search for answers is moving beneath the debris.

SOMETHING BIG COULD BE HEADING TOWARD CALIFORNIA
The Pacific may be getting ready to throw something very unusual toward the West Coast.
A tropical system expected to develop this week is already getting attention, but it’s what some of the forecast models are doing with it next that really stands out.
They strengthen it into a powerful hurricane and then make a dramatic turn north.
Toward Baja.
Toward Southern California.
And potentially toward Arizona.
If that track starts becoming reality, tropical moisture could surge deep into the Southwest, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, strong winds and major changes across a region that rarely has to watch hurricanes coming from this direction.
We’re still days away and that track can absolutely move.
But right now, California is showing up where you don’t normally expect to see it in the path of a potential Pacific hurricane.
And the next few model runs could tell us a lot.

🌊110 MPH FLOOD WALL, 12.5 Miles in 7 Minutes — Then It Ran 2 Miles Backwards Up a River | NEPAL–CHINA FLOOD DISASTER
The glacier let go at about 16,900 feet and the debris flow covered nearly 12.5 miles in seven minutes before it hit Gyirong Port at 5,900 feet. That's around 105 mph.
It came down the Lhende Khola and slammed into the main channel with so much momentum that part of it turned and ran about 2 miles upstream, against the current, into the Gyirong Tsangpo. Chinese state analysts who mapped it in 3D called that extraordinarily rare.
The yellow arrows show the upstream push. The blue shows the main flow continuing south into the Bhote Koshi and on into Nepal.
Nepal is now reporting at least 734 dead and 2,498 missing. China reports at least 16 dead and 546 missing. Around 90 Americans are unaccounted for, including 22 from an Isha Foundation pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. Five Americans have made it to safety.
More than 7,500 have been rescued, including 227 foreign nationals, with 219 injured treated. Helicopters are flying up to 500 trips a day when weather allows, though poor conditions and terrain keep grounding them. Tunnel rescue teams from India and China are working to reach more than 100 workers believed trapped in hydropower tunnels.
The barrier lake has dropped 32 feet off its peak, easing the immediate threat of another surge.

A sudden flash flood turned dangerous deep inside the Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon.
Floodwaters surged through Bright Angel Canyon near Phantom Ranch, washing out bridges, damaging trails and cutting people off inside one of the canyon’s most heavily traveled areas.
More than 50 people had to be airlifted out as crews responded to areas impacted by the flooding.
The force of the water was strong enough to tear through infrastructure and leave parts of the canyon inaccessible as officials began assessing the damage left behind.

A sudden swarm developed around Puracé, with 58 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes detected as rock fractured beneath the region.
Several were strong enough to be felt in surrounding communities.
One reached magnitude 4.1 followed later Saturday night by an M4.3.
And this is happening while Puracé is already sitting at Orange Alert with elevated volcanic unrest.

⛈️💨 DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE NORTHERN PLAINS TODAY
A strong disturbance moving across the Northern Rockies will encounter an increasingly unstable atmosphere across the Dakotas and eastern Montana this afternoon.
⛈️ Thunderstorms are expected to organize into a line of strong to severe storms, quickly pushing east through the region.
💨 MAIN THREAT: DAMAGING WINDS
• Widespread potential for severe wind gusts
• Some gusts could reach 65–80 MPH
• Greatest severe threat near the MT/ND/SD border region, extending into south-central North Dakota and north-central South Dakota
Storms should gradually weaken as they move farther east across the Dakotas this evening.
⚡ Farther south across the Central High Plains, additional high-based thunderstorms could produce powerful outflow winds of 60–75 MPH.

🔥 HEAT DOME TAKES CONTROL
A strengthening heat dome is expected to dominate the Southern Plains, Mid-South and Ozarks over the next 1–2 weeks, significantly reducing rain chances.
☀️ Persistent heat and little rainfall could cause flash drought conditions to quickly worsen across parts of the region.
⛈️ Meanwhile, areas along the edges of the heat dome will stay much more active. The Southwest could see frequent monsoon thunderstorms with locally heavy rain and flash flooding.
🌀 Along the Gulf Coast, tropical disturbances may bring rounds of heavy rainfall, with some potential for gradual tropical development as systems move through the region.
📌 Bottom line: Hotter and drier underneath the heat dome — stormier around its edges.

Big Sur is watching one fire completely change the situation along California’s coast.
The Plaskett Fire was sitting near 1,700 acres just two days ago.
Tonight, it’s beyond 8,200 acres.
And crews still have 0% containment.
That enormous jump has pushed evacuation orders farther into southern Monterey County, while Highway 1 remains closed through roughly 54 miles of the coastline.
At the same time, the Timber Fire continues burning nearby across more than 24,000 acres.
Together, the two fires have now burned more than 33,000 acres — but it’s what Plaskett has done in barely 48 hours that stands out.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made its devastating Gulf Coast landfall, forever changing communities across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
🌊 Catastrophic storm surge overwhelmed coastal communities
🏙️ Roughly 80% of New Orleans flooded
🏚️ Hundreds of thousands of homes were destroyed or left uninhabitable
💔 More than 1,300 lives were lost
💰 Damage totaled approximately $125 billion
Today, 21 years later, we remember those who lost their lives, the families who lost everything, the first responders and volunteers who answered the call, and the communities that rebuilt from unimaginable devastation.
Katrina left scars that can still be felt today — and its lessons continue to shape how we prepare for hurricanes and coastal flooding.

SOMETHING DANGEROUS JUST CAME DOWN MOUNT MERAPI
Mount Merapi unleashed a dangerous burst of activity in Indonesia today.
A pyroclastic flow surged roughly 2 kilometers down the southwestern side of the volcano, carrying superheated gas, ash and volcanic debris down the slope.
And it came after nine lava avalanches had already been recorded earlier in the morning, some traveling as far as 2 kilometers from the crater.
Merapi remains at Alert Level III, with hazardous zones extending along several river corridors where additional pyroclastic flows and lava avalanches could travel.
But the danger isn’t limited to what comes directly out of the crater.
If heavy rain moves over Merapi, loose volcanic material already covering its slopes can be swept into river valleys below, creating dangerous lahars that can travel downstream.

This is the Resuo bridge at Gyirong Port, where the Gyirong Tsangpo and Donglin Tsangpo meet. That confluence is the China–Nepal border line. The road in drops about 3,000 feet down a canyon from Gyirong Town, 16 miles upstream, with rock wall on one side and river on the other the whole way. There is no lateral route out of that valley.
Chinese rescue teams didn't reach the site until later this afternoon, two days after the water came through. The roads in are destroyed and the valley is still considered unsafe, so crews and equipment have been slow getting in.

WASHINGTON DECLARES EMERGENCY AS WILDFIRE THREATENS WATER SUPPLY
The Paradise Fire has created a new problem in Washington as more than 8,000 acres inside the Mill Creek Watershed have now been affected.
That watershed supplies roughly 85–90% of Walla Walla’s drinking water, and the growing concern has now led to a state of emergency being declared.
As the fire continues to burn, attention is turning to what could happen when rain eventually returns. Ash, sediment and debris could be washed toward the water system, while the burned landscape could become increasingly vulnerable to flooding, landslides and debris flows.
Groundwater wells are available as a backup if conditions change, but with nearly 90% of Walla Walla’s drinking water coming from this watershed, officials are preparing for what comes next.

A new national emergency has been declared over security vulnerabilities within the U.S. bulk-power system, with particular concern surrounding certain foreign-produced equipment and the possibility of unauthorized or remote access.
The move puts new attention on vulnerabilities inside the massive system responsible for keeping electricity flowing across the country.
And it comes as America’s power grid is already facing growing pressure from rising electricity demand, extreme weather and other reliability concerns.
Now one of the most critical systems in the country is officially under a national emergency.

BIG SUR IS NOW FACING A DOUBLE WILDFIRE EMERGENCY
Big Sur’s wildfire situation changed dramatically today.
The Plaskett Fire went from just 140 acres Thursday morning to 1,700 acres with zero containment, while the nearby Timber Fire grew by thousands more, pushing beyond 23,000 acres.
With both fires burning along the coast, a 40-mile stretch of Highway 1 is now closed and evacuation orders and warnings remain in place.
But the next 24 hours could be critical. Dry lightning and erratic wind gusts up to 40–50 mph are possible Friday, creating another challenge for an area already dealing with two growing fires.
👇 Anyone near Big Sur seeing this unfold?

MAYON VOLCANO SHOWS NEW SIGNS OF UNREST IN THE PHILIPPINES
Something is building at Mayon.
Three bursts of ash have now unfolded in just two days, with one plume climbing nearly 5,000 feet above the crater.
And the activity isn’t just happening above the volcano.
Volcanic earthquakes are continuing below while sulfur dioxide remains elevated at the summit.
Mayon remains at Alert Level 2 as repeated bursts of ash continue breaking through the crater.
One of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes is making noise again.
👇 If you’re anywhere near Mayon, what are you seeing or hearing right now?

LOOK UP TONIGHT — EARTH’S SHADOW IS ABOUT TO COVER 96% OF THE MOON
Tonight is the night.
Earth’s shadow is about to move across the Moon, eventually covering more than 96% of its surface at the deepest point of the eclipse.
And because this one comes incredibly close to totality, the Moon could take on deep shades of red, copper or orange as the eclipse reaches its peak.
The eclipse unfolds tonight, August 27 into the early hours of August 28, with much of North and South America in position to see it.
No telescope.
No special glasses.
Just look up.
👇 If you catch it tonight, put your pictures below. I want to see what the Moon looks like from where you are.

A rare M6.0 earthquake has just struck off of the coast of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden.
This was a shallow earthquake at 6.2 miles deep and at this time it is too early to tell if a tsunami was generated.
This area is not known for earthquake activity even though there is a fault line in the Gulf it is usually pretty quiet.

1,400+ MISSING AS NEPAL DISASTER TAKES ANOTHER TERRIFYING TURN
The disaster unfolding across Nepal and Tibet just got even more concerning.
More than 1,400 people are now reported missing after the massive glacier collapse sent a wall of water, mud and rock tearing through Himalayan communities.
More than 360 people have been killed, while helicopters and thousands of rescue personnel continue searching areas where roads and bridges have been destroyed.
But now there’s another problem.
The original disaster blocked a river and created a new lake that is continuing to rise.
Authorities are warning that if that blockage gives way, another surge of water could be released downstream.
And this is happening while entire communities remain cut off and hundreds of tourists and pilgrims are still unaccounted for.
👇 Anyone following this disaster from Nepal or the surrounding region — what are you seeing or hearing?

12 INCHES IN 12 HOURS PUSHES JAPAN INTO ITS HIGHEST EMERGENCY
Japan is getting hammered.
Nearly 12 inches fell in just 12 hours in one of the hardest-hit areas, overwhelming drainage systems and sending water rushing through communities.
The situation became serious enough for Japan’s highest-level heavy rain emergency warning, reserved for conditions where dangerous flooding and landslides may already be occurring.
The impacts are widespread:
• Rivers overflowing and levees breaching
• Homes and vehicles becoming inundated
• Landslides and road damage cutting off communities
• People stranded and requiring rescue
• Power outages and transportation disruptions
• Additional rainfall keeping the flood and landslide threat elevated
👇 Anyone in the affected areas, how bad is it where you are?
